An Introduction to Montessori for Aging and Dementia

SEMINAR INFORMATION

If you’re looking for ways to transform your elder care community to an environment of joy and purpose, we’ll show you how to create an environment where older adults can flourish!

In this seminar you will learn about Montessori for Aging and Dementia, an innovative approach to care which enables individuals to care for themselves, others, and their community — bringing purpose and meaning to elders’ lives and increasing staff satisfaction significantly.

During this workshop you will:

  • Discover a powerful approach to dementia care that will totally change your perspective on aging and dementia
  • Learn the first thing you should do to create a sense of community between staff and residents
  • See how an engaging life enrichment program transforms the culture of a long-term care center and ultimately frees up staff time dramatically
  • Learn the process for changing a ho-hum activity program into a dynamic and engaging person-centered program that keeps people interested and has them coming back for more
  • Be able to implement a simple tool for helping people with cognitive impairment participate in meaningful conversations
  • Identify the mistakes almost everyone unknowingly makes in wayfinding and signage, leading to confusion and discord — and find out how to correct them
  • Develop the skills to effectively communicate with people with dementia, so they easily understand what you are trying to convey

OUR SPEAKER

Margaret Jarrell, M.Ed., Certified Montessori Guide, is a Montessori teacher and consultant with over 15 years of experience working with students, families, and educators. She was fortunate enough to have been a Montessori student and her daughter now attends a Montessori school. In her various roles as a Montessori student, teacher, and parent, she has seen firsthand how Dr. Montessori’s philosophy and methods nurture and support the child’s natural love of learning, desire for independence, innate drive to do meaningful work, and need to serve with purpose as a member of a community.

Margaret earned the Practitioner Certificate in Montessori for Aging and Dementia through the Association Montessori International (AMI) while studying with Jennifer Brush and discovered how beautifully the Montessori philosophy of education translates to the home care and residential care settings. She now works on a variety of projects for Brush Development Company, including training and coaching care partners and healthcare professionals who wish to implement Montessori practices in order to improve the quality of life for elders.
